The Department of Wood and Furniture Design and Technology began its activities in September 1999. It is located in Karditsa in the middle of Greece, in Thessaly. Founder of it, is Proffessor Dr. John Kakaras who first had the idea of bringing together the subjects of wood technology - furniture production - furniture design in a curriculu of a new department at the higher education level in Greece. His idea was proved really innovative and fruitful!

The joint efforts and hard work of thee first faculty members and staff resulted in the initial smooth operation of the Department, the erection of two building facilities, eqquiped with all the necessary apparatus and modern equipment. Also, the Greek market guild accepted the new specilisation, "Wood and Furniture Designer and Technologist", and the graduates od the Department found new new jobs, supported the enterprises and helped in the diffusion of new knowledge and capacities in the Greek market of wood and furniture production.
Today, it is well known that the new curriculum and the studies carried out in the Department meet the needs of the Greek market as well sa the Cypriot market (many students come also from Cyprus)which acconts of more than 18.000 small-medium enterprises on the wood and furniture sectors and the like. The new specialazation, which is not offered in other higher education departments, led in the immediate vesting of "the professional rights" of the graduates.
The Department today is fully equipped with modern lab equipment and the faculty members consistently work on following the new modern approaches and technologies in the education and science/research
